Boxoffice was able to get in touch with Mike Hurley , an exhibitor from the state of Maine, for the first installment of our Exhibitor Profile Series.
Hurley, along with his wife, Therese Bagnardi, owns the Colonial Theatre in Belfast, Maine as well as the Temple Theatre in Houlton, Maine.
He took the time to answer our questions about his life in the exhibition industry as well as his personal taste in movies.
How many years have you been in the exhibition industry?:
How did you get started?
My wife and I bought the local movie theatre without a moment's chance to really think about it"
What was the first movie you saw in theatres?
The Spirit of St. Louis
What is your favorite movie of all-time?
with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd.
What are your fondest memories of working in the exhibition industry?
Both of our theatres are in small towns so were an integral part of the community. And we are really quite often the first thing that a kid can go to without it being involved with school or family or church. For me, really one of the greatest enjoyments is having spent 14 years bringing kids through the movies. At one point youll be telling them that they have to be quiet or theyre going to have to leave, and 10 years later those same kids are demanding that you get those kids to shut up so they can watch the movie.
What is your favorite part of working in the exhibition industry?
I love everything about the business. I love the personal aspect of it... I do all my own booking and I love dealing with the people at the studios and the distributors.
What movies are you looking forward to seeing in the future?
You know, I can tell you that Im really looking forward to seeing, personally, Hellboy, Mamma Mia!, The Dark Knight, but the thing that Im always amazed at is there are movies that I have no idea are coming and those are going to be the ones that really knock me overIm always ready to be surprised. And thats what I look forward to
