'Twilight' Snags $69.6 Million Gross

on November 24, 2008 by Phil Contrino

According to weekend actuals, Twilight grossed a staggering $69.6 million in its debut frame. The vampire flick boasts the fourth highest November opening weekend of all-time as well as the fourth largest opening this year. It also set the record for the highest grossing opening weekend for a film directed solely by a woman. The previous record holder was Mimi Leder, whose Deep Impact made $41.2 million during its opening frame.

According to a poll by, 63% of several thousand respondents said that they planned on seeing Twilight again.

While director Catherine Hardwicke, author Stephenie Meyer and the young cast will benefit greatly from the film's success, it's Summit, the film's distributor, that may gain the most.

Summit's first film was 2007's thriller P2 which grossed only $4 million domestically. The distributor has released only five films before Twilight and its biggest success is still Never Back Down, with a $24 million domestic haul. Twilight has already made more in its opening weekend than those five films combined did during their entire domestic theatrical runs.

Twilight is obviously a huge movie for the vampire genre as well. As far as films that have vampires in leading roles, Twilight should easily top the cumulative grosses of Blade II, which made $81.6 million in 2002 (nearly $100 million when adjusted for inflation), and Interview with the Vampire 's $105.6 million (a staggering $183 million when adjusted for inflation).
