The record for the best Wednesday opening currently belongs to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grabbed $44.2 million in July 2007. The original Transformers opened with $27.9 million on Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
Critics in general are not being kind to Transformers 2, but that will hardly influence whether or not the sequel's target audience—young males—will see it or not. If audiences disagree with critics, then Transformers 2 could end up with as much as $165 million by the end of the weekend.

Early online sales for
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
are certainly promising. According to MovieTickets.com, as of Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. PT
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
is responsible for 13% of daily sales and 9% of sales this week. On Fandango.com, the film boasts 15% of daily sales. Not bad considering that it doesn't hit theatres until June 24.
A poll conducted by MovieTickets.com also revealed the following demographic information:
- Males: 68% intend to see the film opening weekend
- Females: 62% intend to see the film opening weekend
- Under-25: 83% intend to see the film opening weekend
- Age 25-34: 81% intend to see the film opening weekend
- Age 35-44: 65% intend to see the film opening weekend
- Age 45-59: 59% intend to see the film opening weekend
- 60-and-over: 7% intend to see the film opening weekend
It should come as no surprise that anticipation for the sequel is high considering the level of success obtained by its predecessor. 2007's Transformers grossed a staggering $319.2 million domestically, which made the action flick the best box office performer of director Michael Bay's career. That's certainly something to brag about considering that Bay has directed such blockbusters as The Rock and Armageddon.
Paramount recently premiered new footage of the film at the MTV Movie Awards, but it may have been overshadowed by the highly anticipated trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Television spots for Bay's film have become more frequent, and they should absolutely saturate the marketplace as the June 24 release date nears.
Transformer 2 's release date will allow it to have plenty of time to grab as much cash as possible before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince lands in theatres on July 15. The two films will probably wind up in an intense competition for the title of the summer's most successful blockbuster.
