Forum Buzz: Did 'The Hobbit' Hold Off 'Star Trek'?

on December 17, 2012 by Shawn Robbins

forumbuzz.pngThe voting came down to a photo finish, but Star Trek Into Darkness pulled a surprise upset over The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey during the latter's final week of eligibility on our forums' Most Anticipated Movies tracking. This is the first time the Trek sequel has ever ranked as the most anticipated film on our chart.

Paramount and Bad Robot launched their announcement teaser for Star Trek Into Darkness back on December 6, and the response has been glowing across the Internet. Our forum community backed that up by moving Trek upward three spots on the chart in a huge upset over The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which slid back to #2 in a photo finish.

The news wasn't all bad for Hobbit, though: the film joins The Avengers and The Hunger Games as notable releases that finished in second place on our list upon release. Overall, An Unexpected Journey finished in the #1 spot 14 times in 2012, second only to the 23 times marked by The Dark Knight Rises. The second Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug, is now eligible for voting.

Django Unchained also moved up slightly with its impending release, while Zero Dark Thirty continued to make moves into the top ten by jumping three spots up to #8.
