Fox's Avatar continued to lead the way at the daily box office on Tuesday. The newly crowned worldwide box office champion grossed $3.20 million for the day. That was down 1 percent from Monday and down a healthy 24 percent from last Tuesday. Avatar has now grossed a massive $558.18 million through 40 days of release, placing it $42.61 million away from matching the unadjusted domestic record of James Cameron's Titanic. Avatar currently boasts an extremely impressive total gross to opening weekend ratio of 7.25 to 1 and is in great shape to experience another strong hold this coming weekend.
The Book of Eli remained in second place with $1.32 million. Warner's R-rated release starring Denzel Washington was up 1 percent from Monday, but still down a noteworthy 47 percent from last Tuesday. The Book of Eli has grossed $63.37 million through 12 days, which means the film is just $2 million away from out-grossing Washington's last film, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. The Book of Eli will pass up The Taking of Pelham on Thursday.
Sony's Legion held steady in third with $1.20 million. The R-rated film from Screen Gems was down a reasonable 6 percent from Monday, though it should be noted that most wide releases experienced daily increases on Tuesday. Legion has grossed $19.97 million through its first five days of release, placing it 14 percent ahead of the five-day start of Lionsgate's recent Daybreakers.
It's Complicated was up a strong 28 percent and three spots from Monday to move into fourth. The comedy from Universal grossed $0.58 million for the day, which was down just 27 percent from last Tuesday. It's Complicated is now on the verge of crossing the $100 million mark, with a 33-day domestic gross of $99.29 million. Look for It's Complicated to reach that milestone on Thursday.
Paramount's The Lovely Bones rounded out the day's top five with $0.55 million. The Peter Jackson directed film stabilized some yesterday, as it was up 9 percent from Monday and down 42 percent from last Tuesday. After 12 days of wide release The Lovely Bones has grossed $32.30 million, placing it 20 percent behind the pace of 2003's Big Fish.
