Avatar led the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day on Wednesday. Fox's 3D sci-fi phenomenon grossed $1.85 million for the day, which topped Sony's Dear John by $341,360. That was a larger gap than the $118,399 that separated the two on Tuesday. Avatar has now led the daily box office for an amazing 50 of the past 55 days and has grossed $635.47 million domestically. Avatar is finally showing some signs of relative slowing as the film fell beneath the $2 million daily mark for the first time yesterday and was down 30 percent from last Wednesday. At the same time Avatar was down a modest 9 percent from Tuesday, which was one of the day's stronger daily holds for films currently in the top ten.

Dear John remained in second place, but was down a sharp 21 percent from Tuesday. The Screen Gems romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried grossed $1.51 million for the day. Dear John has exceeded expectations thus far with a strong $36.02 million in six days, but is also showing early signs of being quite front-loaded towards its opening weekend performance. Dear John is currently running 8 percent ahead of last year's He's Just Not That Into You.

Lionsgate's From Paris with Love held steady in third with $0.63 million. After experiencing solid holds each of the past two days, the R-rated action-thriller starring John Travolta was down an alarming 24 percent from Tuesday. That represented the day's largest daily decline among wide releases. The six-day start for From Paris with Love stands at a disappointing $10.44 million.

Warner's Edge of Darkness was also down sharply on Wednesday. The R-rated thriller starring Mel Gibson was down 21 percent from Tuesday and down 50 percent from last Wednesday with a daily take of $0.55 million. Both Edge of Darkness and From Paris with Love were positioned near the Super Bowl in an attempt to duplicate the success of last year's Taken, but both films have clearly failed to do so.

The Book of Eli once again rounded out the day's unchanged top five. The R-rated Warner Bros. release starring Denzel Washington grossed $0.41 million, which was down 13 percent from Tuesday and down 38 percent from last Wednesday. The Book of Eli has grossed $83.45 million through 27 days of release.
