‘Alice’ Leads Again on Wednesday

on March 25, 2010 by Daniel Garris

Alice in Wonderland continued to lead the daily box office on Wednesday. Disney's 3D blockbuster grossed $2.38 million for the day. That was down 11 percent from Tuesday and down 50 percent from last Wednesday, as the film is slowing down a bit this week in the days leading up to Friday's debut of Paramount's How to Train Your Dragon on 3D screens. Alice in Wonderland has led the daily box office for 20 consecutive days, but Dragon will put an end to that streak on Friday. The 20-day domestic gross for Alice in Wonderland stands at $273.25 million, placing the film 5 percent ahead of the pace of 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Sony's The Bounty Hunter remained in second place with $1.28 million. However, the PG-13 rated romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler was down 19 percent from Tuesday, which marked the day's largest daily percentage decline among wide releases. Before yesterday, the film's midweek holds on Monday and Tuesday had been very respectable. The Bounty Hunter has grossed $25.00 million in six days and will zoom past the $30 million mark over the weekend.

Remaining in third place was Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The family film based on the popular illustrated novel grossed $0.80 million, which was down 14 percent from Tuesday. Wimpy Kid continues to fall off fairly quickly for a family film on the heels of its better than expected debut this past weekend. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has grossed $24.88 million through six days and will also zoom past the $30 million mark over the weekend.

Paramount's She's Out of My League was up one spot to finish in fourth. After finishing a hair behind Universal's Green Zone on Tuesday, the R-rated comedy topped Green Zone by $13,507 on Wednesday with a daily take of $0.539 million. She's Out of My League was down 34 percent from last Wednesday, which represented the day's smallest percentage decline from last Wednesday among wide releases.

Green Zone was down one spot to round out the day's top five with $0.526 million. The disappointing action-thriller was down 17 percent from Tuesday and down 44 percent from last Wednesday. Fellow Universal release Repo Men was also down 17 percent from Tuesday. The sci-fi film finished in sixth with $0.492 million. Respective total grosses for Green Zone and Repo Men stand at $26.58 million and $7.82 million.
