Lionsgate's Kick-Ass led the daily box office for a third straight day on Wednesday. The R-rated comic book adaptation grossed $1.30 million, which was down 13 percent from Tuesday. That was a decent hold for the day, though it should also be noted that Wednesday holds for most wide releases were a bit stronger than usual yesterday. With Disney's Oceans entering the marketplace today, Thursday declines could be a bit harsher than normal. The gap between Kick-Ass and the rest of the top five continued to shrink, as only $0.33 million separated Kick-Ass from Warner's Clash of the Titans for the day. The six-day total for Kick-Ass stands at $24.18 million.
How to Train Your Dragon remained in second place with $1.11 million. The 3D computer animated film from Paramount and DreamWorks continues to hold up exceptionally well as it was down 8 percent from Tuesday and down only 6 percent from last Wednesday. While it could take a bit of a hit from Oceans today, Dragon should experience another tremendous hold over the weekend and has a good chance of returning to the top of the box office for the upcoming frame. The 27-day total for How to Train Your Dragon stands at $161.77 million.
Fox's Date Night was up one spot from Tuesday to finish in third on Wednesday with $1.06 million. Date Night was down only 4 percent from Tuesday (which represented a much better Wednesday hold than the film saw last Wednesday) and was down a modest 31 percent from last Wednesday. Date Night held up well last weekend and is looking like it could do so again this weekend, even with CBS Films' The Back-up Plan entering the marketplace on Friday. Date Night has grossed $51.83 million in 13 days.
After holding up decently on Monday and Tuesday, Sony's Death at a Funeral was down a sharp 18 percent on Wednesday. The R-rated comedy from Screen Gems was down one spot to finish in fourth place with $0.971 million. The film's six-day total stands at $19.52 million. While Death at a Funeral represents a relatively inexpensive project by Hollywood standards, the film's performance thus far has been a bit weaker than most were expecting it to be.
Clash of the Titans finished just $3,384 behind Death at a Funeral to remain in fifth place for the day. The big-budget 3D remake grossed $0.967 million, which represented the film's first day with a daily gross of less than $1 million. Titans was down 11 percent from Tuesday and down 39 percent from last Wednesday. Clash of the Titans has grossed $135.72 million through 20 days of release.
