‘Titans’ Inches Past ‘Date Night’

on April 14, 2010 by Daniel Garris

The race for first place at the daily box office between Warner's Clash of the Titans and Fox's Date Night grew even closer on Tuesday. Titans grossed $1.894 million for the day, which outpaced Date Night by only $2,102. The 3D fantasy remake was unchanged from Monday and down 62 percent from last Tuesday. With Spring Break and the Easter holiday moving further behind us, percentage declines from the previous week remained sharp for nearly all films on Tuesday. Clash of the Titans has grossed $114.01 million in 12 days of release, but is falling off quickly for a 3D release.

Date Night finished in a close second with $1.892 million. The PG-13 comedy starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey was up a respectable 9 percent over Monday and could overtake Clash of the Titans for first place in the daily rankings either today or Thursday. The film's five-day start stands at $28.84 million, which is towards the lower end of pre-release expectations. Date Night will cross the $30 million mark today and will zoom past the $40 million mark over the weekend.

Paramount's How to Train Your Dragon remained in third place with $1.39 million. The latest computer animated film from DreamWorks Animation was unchanged from Monday and down 64 percent from last Tuesday. Dragon has grossed $136.18 million through 19 days, ranking the film as the second highest grossing release of 2010 so far domestically. How to Train Your Dragon is currently running 7 percent behind the pace of last year's Monsters vs. Aliens.

The Last Song was up 17 percent and two spots from Monday to finish in fourth on Tuesday. The romantic drama from Disney grossed $0.570 million, which topped Why Did I Get Married Too? by a very slim $812 for the day. Though it was down 67 percent from last Tuesday, The Last Song is holding up better than expected thus far. The film's 14-day total stands at a very solid $43.31 million.

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? experienced another poor daily hold, as the Lionsgate release was down 12 percent from Monday and down a massive 74 percent from last Tuesday. Married Too finished in fifth for the day with $0.569 million. Why Did I Get Married Too? will cross the $50 million mark today, but should continue its free-fall this weekend when Sony's Death at a Funeral debuts in theatres.
