'Inception' Stays #1; 'Salt' Posts Respectable Debut

on July 24, 2010 by Phil Contrino

According to BoxOffice.com's Early Weekend Estimates, Inception will hold onto its spot on top of the box office with a sophomore haul of $42 million. It took the Warner Bros. release seven days to hit $100 million, and now the $200 million plateau is within range. It was clear during the course of the week that Inception was going to have a great hold since it posted daily grosses consistently above $8 million. The mind-bender is compelling moviegoers to take in multiple viewings and it definitely has lived up to its must-see reputation.

Salt is on pace for a solid $35 million debut. The spy thriller's audience was certainly diluted by the strength of Inception since both films appeal to action enthusiasts.

Ramona and Beezus is set for a modest $8 million. With a reported production budget of only $15 million, the G-rated flick should still end up pulling in a profit after all is said and done.

Check back tomorrow for studio weekend estimates.
