'The Expendables' and 'Eat Pray Love' lead as the summer box office season winds down.

Another Day in First Place for ‘The Expendables’

on August 24, 2010 by Daniel Garris

For the tenth time over the past eleven days, Lionsgate's The Expendables led the daily box office. The ensemble action film grossed $1.95 million for the day, as it continues to exceed expectations. The Expendables was down a sizable 64 percent from Sunday and down 50 percent from last Monday, but after the film's performance last week it is evident that The Expendables is more of a weekend film given that it is skewing towards older moviegoers. Furthermore, with the summer box office season now nearing its end, daily holds in general on Monday were noticeably weaker than they were last Monday. The Expendables has grossed $67.31 million to date and will clear the $70 million mark on Wednesday.

Eat Pray Love occupied the runner up position for the day with $1.53 million. The Julia Roberts vehicle was down 59 percent from Sunday and down 50 percent from last Monday. Eat Pray Love has grossed $48.74 million in eleven days and is set to clear the $50 million mark today. The film is currently running 8 percent ahead of the pace of last year's Julie & Julia. However, that lead will continue to shrink going forward with Monday's daily gross for Eat Pray Love coming in a bit lower than the respective $1.63 million daily gross of Julie & Julia.

Fox's Vampires Suck claimed third place with $1.243 million. The vampire spoof topped Sony's The Other Guys by a very slim $2,814 for the day and should fall behind The Other Guys in the daily rankings before much longer. Vampires Suck was down 59 percent from Sunday. Vampires Suck has grossed $19.81 million through six days of release, but is already showing signs of being quite front-loaded (which has been the trend for previous spoofs from the team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer).

The Other Guys finished in fourth with $1.240 million. The buddy cop comedy was down 59 percent from Sunday and down a solid 45 percent from last Monday. The Other Guys has grossed $89.49 million in 18 days, placing it 8 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's Step Brothers. The Other Guys will cross the $90 million mark today and will surpass the $100 million mark before much longer.

Piranha 3D rounded out the day's top five with $1.089 million. The 3D horror film from The Weinstein Company topped the $1.086 million Monday gross of Universal's Nanny McPhee Returns by $3,633. Piranha 3D has grossed $11.20 million in its first four days of release, while Nanny McPhee Returns has grossed $9.49 million over the same four-day span.
