Another day at the top of the box office for 'Inception,' while 'Dinner for Schmucks' remains in second.

‘Inception’ Reaches $200 Million

on August 04, 2010 by Daniel Garris

Warner's Inception led the daily box office on Tuesday with $4.12 million. In doing so, the Christopher Nolan directed film reached the $200 million domestic milestone on its 19th day of release. Inception marks the third film for Nolan to reach $200 million (joining 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's The Dark Knight) and the second film for Leonardo DiCaprio to do so (joining 1997's Titanic). Inception is the seventh release of 2010 to join the $200 million club. Inception was down 4 percent from Monday, which marked one of the day's poorer daily holds among wide releases. However, the film was still down a healthy 32 percent from last Tuesday thanks to its strong holding power over the past week.

After a strong hold on Monday, Dinner for Schmucks slid a respectable 4 percent on Tuesday. The Paramount comedy grossed $3.42 million to remain in second place for the day. Yesterday saw Dinner for Schmucks cross the $30 million mark. The film's five-day start stands at $30.50 million, placing it 37 percent ahead of the recent Get Him to the Greek at the same point in its run. Though Dinner for Schmucks is holding up fairly well so far, the film is still likely to take a significant hit from Sony's The Other Guys when it enters the marketplace on Friday.

Salt remained in third place with $2.72 million. The Angelina Jolie vehicle from Sony was up a solid 5 percent from Monday and down 38 percent from last Tuesday. Salt is displaying very respectable holding power thus far, especially for its genre. The film's twelve-day total stands at $76.36 million. That places Salt 20 percent behind the pace of 2008's Wanted. With Salt holding up better than Wanted, the film looks to be in store for a final domestic gross in the neighborhood of $115 million to $120 million.

Universal's Despicable Me remained in fourth place with $2.63 million. Universal's computer animated blockbuster continues to hold up very well, as it was up 9 percent over Monday and down 27 percent from last Tuesday. Despicable Me has now grossed $195.37 million through 26 days of release, leaving it just $4.63 million away from the $200 million mark. Despicable Me will reach the milestone on either Thursday or Friday.

After a very disappointing four-day start Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore finally had a bit of good news on Tuesday. The sequel from Warner Bros. experienced one of the day's better daily holds, as it was up 22 percent over Monday. Cats & Dogs 2 rounded out the day's top five with $2.09 million. Despite the strong hold on Tuesday, Cats & Dogs 2 has still only managed $16.08 million in its first five days (and that's with the help of higher priced 3D admissions).
