In what will be its last day at the top of the daily box office, The American led the way once again on Thursday. The George Clooney vehicle from Focus grossed $0.72 million, which was down 13 percent from Wednesday. The film has led the daily box office for eight of the past nine days. After a better than expected start this past weekend, The American didn't hold up especially well during the midweek. Nonetheless, the film led the weekly box office with $19.29 million and has now grossed $22.44 million through nine days in theatres.

Fox's Machete lost a bit of ground on The American as it fell a sizable 16 percent from Wednesday. The Robert Rodriguez directed film grossed $0.69 million and finished $35,415 behind The American for the day to remain in second. Machete finished in second for the week with $16.62 million. That was towards the lower end of pre-release expectations and was 7.5 percent stronger than the first week performance of 2007's Grindhouse.

Sony's Takers held steady in third place with $0.60 million. The PG-13 crime film from Screen Gems was down 7 percent from Wednesday and down 50 percent from last Thursday. Takers finished in third for the week with $15.55 million. That was down a very solid 41 percent from the previous week and brings the film's two-week total to a better than expected $42.01 million.

Going the Distance rounded out its first week in theatres with another fourth place finish. The R-rated romantic comedy from Warner Bros. grossed $0.51 million, which was down 5 percent from Wednesday. Going the Distance experienced decent holding power during the midweek, but after its slow start this past weekend the film was only able to manage a first week gross of $10.16 million.

Lionsgate's The Expendables remained in sixth place with $0.42 million. That was down 6 percent from Wednesday and down 46 percent from last Thursday. The Expendables has exceeded expectations with a four-week gross of $95.24 million and is now just $4.76 million away from reaching the $100 million milestone.

Avatar grossed $0.20 million on Thursday. Fox's reissue of James Cameron's record breaking blockbuster was up 4 percent over Wednesday and down 37 percent from last Thursday. Through two weeks of release, the reissue of Avatar has grossed $9.07 million. That brings the film's lifetime domestic total to $758.83 million.
