Little Fockers led Wednesday's box office, but clearly lost some of its potential audience to True Grit.

‘Little Fockers’ #1, but Weaker than Expected

Universal's Little Fockers debuted in first place on Wednesday with an estimated $7.3 million. However, the third installment of the comedy franchise performed well below expectations as well as the $12.07 million opening day performance of 2004's Meet the Fockers. Over its first five days of release Meet the Fockers registered a five-day to Friday ratio of 5.84 to 1. With the significantly lower opening day gross of the two, Little Fockers could hold up slightly better over its first few days, which would place it on course for a five-day start in the area of $44.0 million.

In what will continue to be a close race for second place over the next few days, Disney's TRON: Legacy was neck and neck with Paramount's True Grit on Wednesday. The 3D sci-fi sequel grossed $5.63 million, which was down 11 percent from Tuesday. That was very similar to the 10 percent daily slide 2004's A Series of Unfortunate Events experienced on its first Wednesday. TRON: Legacy crossed the $60 million mark yesterday and has grossed $62.08 million in six days.

True Grit opened in a close third with $5.54 million. That represented a very nice start for the western remake from the Coen Brothers. True Grit outpaced expectations yesterday and clearly took some of the steam out of Little Fockers in the process. True Grit looks to be headed for a five-day start in the area of $34.0 million and should hold up better than Little Fockers once Christmas weekend is over given both its stronger reviews and stronger early word of mouth.

Warner's Yogi Bear fell two spots from Tuesday to claim fourth place on Wednesday with $2.91 million. The 3D family film was down a slim 1 percent from Tuesday, as the older skewing new releases had little effect on it. Yogi Bear is performing slightly below expectations with a six-day start of $24.70 million and is on course to reach the $30 million mark on Friday.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader rounded out the day's top five with $2.52 million.  The fantasy sequel from Fox was down 5 percent from Tuesday and up 77 percent over last Wednesday.  Dawn Treader topped the $50 million mark yesterday and is in good shape to hold up well over Christmas weekend.  Disney's Tangled followed closely behind in sixth place with $2.26 million and is in even better shape to have an excellent Christmas weekend hold.  The 29-day total for Tangled stands at $134.62 million.
