Friday Update: Universal's Little Fockers continued to lead the daily box office on Thursday, albeit in an underwhelming fashion. The third installment of the comedy franchise grossed an estimated $7.2 million, as the film was unchanged from Wednesday. That brings the two-day start for Little Fockers to an estimated $14.4 million. Thus far Little Fockers is running a disappointing 41 percent behind the pace of 2004's Meet the Fockers (which experienced a 2 percent increase on its first Thursday). At its current pace, Little Fockers is on course for a five-day start in the area of $41 million to $42 million. Given poor reviews it is extremely unlikely that Little Fockers will hold up as well as Meet the Fockers did once Christmas weekend is over.
TRON: Legacy held steady in second place with an estimated $6.11 million. Disney's big-budget 3D sequel was up a solid 8 percent over Wednesday. TRON: Legacy was easily the week's top film with a seven-day gross of $68.19 million, which fell within the film's widely varying pre-release expectations. TRON: Legacy is currently running 46 percent ahead of the pace of 2004's A Series of Unfortunate Events and 33 percent behind 2007's I Am Legend. It will be a close race for second place over the weekend between TRON: Legacy and True Grit, but True Grit will likely have the upper hand since films that skew older typically experience stronger Christmas Day increases.
True Grit grossed an estimated $5.69 million to remain in third place on Thursday. The acclaimed western remake from the Coen Brothers was up 3 percent over Wednesday, as it is already holding up better than Little Fockers. As mentioned, True Grit has a good chance of beating out TRON: Legacy in what will be a close race for second this weekend. The film is on pace to exceed opening weekend expectations with a strong five-day start in the area of $33 million to $34 million.
Family fare rounded out places four through six. Warner's Yogi Bear finished in fourth with $3.29 million, Fox's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader rounded out the day's top five with $2.98 million and Tangled claimed sixth place with $2.64 million. All three films experienced notable increases over Wednesday, with the increase for Yogi Bear being the weakest of the three. Respective totals stand at $137.26 million for Tangled, $53.13 million for Dawn Treader and $27.99 million for Yogi Bear. Look for all three films to continue to hold up well throughout the remainder of the holiday season, especially on weekdays.
Please note that today's numbers are estimates due to Christmas Eve.
