True Grit topped Little Fockers on Tuesday as it continues to close in on the $100 million milestone.

‘True Grit’ Passes $90 Million Mark

on January 05, 2011 by Daniel Garris

Paramount's True Grit led the daily box office for a second straight day on Tuesday. The critically acclaimed western remake grossed $2.17 million, which was down 17 percent from Monday and down 65 percent from last Tuesday. With Tuesday being one day further away from the holidays, grosses for all wide releases understandably declined from Monday. True Grit reached the $90 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $91.46 million through two weeks of release. The film continues to outpace expectations in a very big way and is just a few days away from becoming the first film in the long history of the Coen Brothers to reach the $100 million domestic milestone.

Little Fockers held steady in a close second place with $2.01 million. Universal's comedy sequel trailed True Grit by $157,537 for the day. Little Fockers was down 18 percent from Monday and down 74 percent from last Tuesday. With the holidays behind us, Little Fockers is starting to lose momentum faster than True Grit. Little Fockers has grossed $107.02 million through its first two weeks of release, placing it 37 percent behind the pace of 2004's Meet the Fockers (without taking into account ticket price inflation).

TRON: Legacy grossed $1.76 million to remain in third place. Disney's 3D sci-fi sequel was down 25 percent from Monday and down 72 percent from last Tuesday. Films with family appeal were down especially sharply yesterday. The 19-day gross for TRON: Legacy stands at $135.40 million, as the film remains the highest grossing domestic release of this December.

Fox Searchlight's Black Swan grossed $1.33 million to take fourth place for a second straight day. The Darren Aronofsky directed film was down 11 percent from Monday and down 47 percent from last Tuesday. Black Swan crossed the $50 million mark yesterday and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, especially given its continuously strong per-location average.

Also holding up nicely was fellow Best Picture hopeful The Fighter. The Paramount release rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $1.16 million. The film was down 10 percent from Monday and down 48 percent from last Tuesday. The Fighter has grossed $48.85 million in 19 days and will reach the $50 million mark either today or Thursday.
