'Wimpy Kid' Sequel Edges 'Sucker Punch'

on March 26, 2011 by Phil Contrino

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules was able to rake in a healthy $7.3 million on Friday. The sequel is now on pace to match its predecessor's debut haul of $22.1 million. Expect a third Wimpy Kid film in the near future.

Sucker Punch is off to a very modest start. Director Zack Snyder's action flick managed $8 million on Friday with the help of $825,000 from midnight shows. The Warner Bros. release will lose ground to Wimpy Kid on Saturday, and it won't catch up on Sunday. It's still very possible that Sucker Punch could fall short of the $20 million mark.

Limitless and The Lincoln Lawyer are both holding up very well. While Limitless wasn't exactly a critical darling, moviegoers seem to be enjoying its high-concept premise. Lincoln Lawyer marks a rare moment when moviegoers and critics are on the same page. The Matthew McConaughey vehicle is definitely one of this spring's few sleeper hits.

Check back tomorrow for studio estimates.
