Fox's Rio grossed $1.55 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a 13th straight day. The 3D computer animated film was down 19 percent from Tuesday and down 57 percent from last Wednesday. With Universal's Fast Five entering the marketplace on Friday, today will mark Rio's last day at the top of the box office. Rio has grossed $87.61 million through 13 days of release and is set to reach the $100 million milestone over the weekend. The film's performance is even more impressive when taking into account its terrific international grosses.
Fox also continued to claim second place as Water for Elephants grossed $1.43 million for the day. The drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson was down 17 percent from Tuesday. That represented a very reasonable daily decline when taking into account how well the film held up on Tuesday. Water For Elephants has grossed $21.77 in its first six days of release. That is in line with pre-release expectations, but the film is showing early signs that suggest it will hold up well going forward.
Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family held steady in third with $1.11 million. However, the Lionsgate release was down a massive 30 percent from Tuesday's performance. Tyler Perry's films are traditionally very front-loaded and Madea's Big Happy Family is proving to be no different. At this rate Madea's Big Happy Family is set to experience a huge second weekend decline this weekend. With a six-day gross of $29.94 million, Madea's Big Happy Family will cross the $30 million mark today.
African Cats held up nicely once again on Wednesday as it was up one spot to take fourth with $0.51 million. The Disneynature release fell just 7 percent from Tuesday, which represented the day's best daily hold among wide releases. Both 2009's Earth and last year's Oceans were relatively stronger on weekdays than they were on weekends and African Cats is clearly continuing the trend. With a six-day gross of $7.73 million, African Cats is currently running 20 percent behind the pace of Oceans.
Sony's Soul Surfer grossed $0.39 million and in the process surpassed the $30 million mark. The TriStar release starring AnnaSophia Robb has grossed $30.06 million in 20 days, thanks in part to strong word of mouth. Thus far Soul Surfer has registered a total gross to opening weekend ratio of 2.84 to 1.
