'Rio' Repeats; 'Madea's Big Happy Family' and 'Water For Elephants' Start Strong

on April 24, 2011 by Phil Contrino

After taking in $10.75 million on Friday and $9.9 million on Saturday, Rio is poised to finish in first place for the second weekend in a row. 20th Century Fox's latest animated effort is already showing incredible staying power. Rio should manage to hold up quite well as Fast Five and Thor invade the marketplace in the weeks to comeneither of those tentpoles are family friendly.

With $10.5 million in the bank on Friday and $9.2 million on Saturday, Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family was forced to settle for second place. This is a typically strong debut for Perry even though it doesn't come close to the $41 million opening of Madea Goes to Jail in 2009. The $11,255 location average is the highest in the marketplace. Lionsgate is reporting that 72% of the audience was female, and 69% was over 25. Family snagged an overall A rating from CinemaScore.

Water For Elephants is off to a very solid start. The romantic drama took in $7 million on Friday and $6.5 million on Saturday, which will give a third place debut. The 20th Century Fox release is the kind of prestige pic that mature moviegoers usually need to wait until the fall for, and that means it'll be seen as a breath of fresh air as tentpoles begin to flood theaters. Expect Elephants to maintain its audience very well in the weeks to come.

Disneynature's African Cats is poised to end up with a debut right in the middle of 2009's Earth ($8.8 million) and 2010's Oceans ($6.1 million). The nature doc will need to make all it can this week before it is inevitably overshadowed by more high-profile releases.

There were some very strong holds elsewhere in the top 10. HOP was able to capitalize on the Easter spirit and it fell only 17% from last weekend. Insidious has been defying the typical steep drop that plaques most horror flicksthe FilmDistrict release dipped only 20% during its fourth frame.
