'Rio' Set To Easily Claim Top Spot; 'Scream 4' Underwhelms

on April 16, 2011 by Phil Contrino

20th Century Fox's Rio was able to take in a healthy $10.2 million on Friday, which puts it on pace for $37.5 million during its debut frame. The animated flick should have a very strong Saturday. Look for director Carlos Saldanha's latest effort to hold up very well in the weeks to come as families search out wholesome entertainment.

Scream 4 was able to take in only $8 million on Friday. The sequel may hold up a little better than most horror films considering that it mixes quite a bit of comedy in with its scares. Wes Craven's latest needs to make as much money as it can before facing tough competition for the attention males 18-34 when Fast Five hits on April 29.

Despite playing at only 707 locations, The Conspirator is performing quite well. Robert Redford's latest directorial effort clearly has a healthy appeal among older moviegoers looking for a prestige flick.

Check back tomorrow for studio weekend estimates.
