Fast Five continued its impressive performance on Thursday.

$107.3 Million for ‘Fast Five’ in First Week

on May 06, 2011 by Daniel Garris

In what is expected to be its last day in first place, Universal's Fast Five lead the daily box office on Thursday with $4.12 million. The blockbuster sequel starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson stabilized after Wednesday's sharp decline, but still experienced one of Thursday's larger daily declines among wide releases. Fast Five simply blew away the competition this week with a better than expected seven-day start of $107.33 million. Fast Five is currently running an impressive 20 percent ahead of the pace of 2009's Fast & Furious. While Fast Five is likely to take a significant hit from Paramount's Thor this weekend, it will have a good chance of stabilizing after this weekend thanks to very strong word of mouth.

Fox's Water For Elephants held steady in second with $0.79 million. The drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson fell 12 percent from Wednesday and 42 percent from last Thursday. Water For Elephants finished in third for the week with $12.88 million, which was down a reasonable 44 percent from the previous week and brings the film's two-week total to $36.01 million.

Fellow Fox release Rio grossed $0.59 million to continue to claim third place. The 3D computer animated blockbuster was down 9 percent from Wednesday and down 64 percent from last Thursday. Rio took second place for the week with $17.48 million, but clearly lost momentum as it was down 50 percent from the previous frame. With that said, the film has already grossed $106.70 million in 21 days and continues to perform much stronger internationally.

Simply put it was a tough week for the week's other two wide releases. Disney's Prom grossed $0.14 million on Thursday and took fifth place for the week with $5.38 million. The Weinstein Company's Hoodwinked Too! grossed $0.16 million on Thursday and finished with an even softer sixth place finish of $4.83 million for the week. While expectations were modest for both to begin with, both films grossed slightly less than half of their respective expectations heading into the week.
