Bridesmaids continued to display strong holding power on Tuesday, while Thor held in second place.

‘Bridesmaids’ Leads Tuesday with $3.4 Million

on May 18, 2011 by Daniel Garris

Universal's Bridesmaids led the daily box office for a second consecutive day on Tuesday. The break-out comedy starring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph grossed $3.41 million for the day. That was up 14 percent from Monday, which represented another strong daily hold for the film, especially on the heels of Monday's impressive hold. Bridesmaids topped the $30 million mark yesterday and has now grossed a better than expected $32.65 million through just five days of release.

In just one day's time, Bridesmaids has gone from running 34 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's What Happens in Vegas... through Monday to running 39 percent ahead of that film through Tuesday. That is obviously a great sign for Bridesmaids going forward and the film's prospects of reaching the $100 million milestone are looking brighter and brighter with each passing day.

Thor remained in second with $3.09 million, as it lost a bit more ground on Bridesmaids in the daily battle for first place. The superhero adaptation from Paramount and Marvel was up 8 percent over Monday and down a solid 43 percent from last Tuesday. With a twelve-day gross of $125.40 million Thor continues to run in line with its lofty expectations. However, the competition will begin to get much tougher for Thor and all other holdovers on Friday when Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide is launched into theatres.

Universal's Fast Five grossed $1.73 million for the day. Like Thor, Fast Five was also up 8 percent over Monday, but Fast Five was down just 36 percent from last Tuesday. That points towards Fast Five experiencing the better hold between the two films this coming weekend. The blockbuster sequel starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson has exceeded expectations with a 19-day gross of $173.01 million. That leaves Fast Five just $26.99 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic milestone.
