on May 22, 2011 by Phil Contrino

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides currently has 2011's best opening. Even though Disney was certainly hoping to hit $100 million, the debut is still a success. The buzz surrounding the film is strong. More than 87,000 Flixster users have combined to give the sequel a healthy 73% approval rating, and the CinemaScore rating is a B+. 54% of the audience was male, and the age breakdown was pretty spread out:

Ages 2-11: 8%
Ages 12-17: 16%
Ages 18-25: 22%
Ages 26-34 - 24%
Ages 35-49 - 19%
Ages 50+ -- 11%

Internationally, On Stranger Tides brought in a staggering $256.3 million. The film's worldwide total stands at $346.4 million.

On Stranger Tides by territory:

Russia $28.6M
China $20.0M
UK/Ire $19.5M
Germany $19.4M
Japan $18.2M
France $14.8M
Scandinavia $13.9M
Korea $12.0M
Italy $11.5M
Australia $10.3M

With $6.4 million on Friday and $8.2 million on Saturday, Bridesmaids is holding up very well. Universal's comedy was able to easily edge past Thor to claim the #2 spot. The fact that the Pirates of the Caribbean films have plenty of female fans makes the hold even more impressive.

Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris is off to a very promising start. The Sony Pictures Classics release now holds 2011's best location average.
