'Thor' Remains #1; 'Bridesmaids' Easily Edges 'Priest'

on May 15, 2011 by Phil Contrino

With around $9 million in the bank on Friday and $15.3 million on Saturday, Thor is set for $34.5 million during its sophomore frame. While that's a respectable hold for a summer tentpole, the Paramount release failed to truly capitalize on the lack of any new blockbusters emerging this weekend. Thor will be hurt quite a bit by the emergence of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides next weekend.

Bridesmaids is off to an excellent start. With $7.8 million in the bank on Friday and $10.7 million on Saturday, Universal's comedy is on pace for $22.4 million during its debut frame. This will definitely boost star Kristen Wiig's stock considerably, and studios may start taking more chances on raunchy comedies aimed at women. Early buzz is strong with nearly 15,000 Flixster users combining to give the film a very healthy 85% approval rating. The overall CinemaScore rating is a B+. Universal is reporting that 67% of the audience was female, and 63% was over 30.

Priest is headed for a lackluster debut. With an estimated $5.65 million on Friday and $5.65 million on Saturday, the dark action flick will end up below $15 million. That represents a dip from the $17.5 million haul of Legion, the previous collaboration between star Paul Bettany and director Scott Stewart. Sony is reporting that the audience was 57% male, and 57% over 25. The overall CinemaScore rating is a weak C+. Internationally, Priest mustered $25.6 million.

With $58 million internationally from 8,800 dates in 61 territories, Fast Five is the #1 film abroad this weekend. The sequel's international total is a staggering $271 million, which puts its worldwide total at $440.5 million.
