With $21.6 million in the bank on Friday, Green Lantern is on pace for $57.5 million during its debut frame. That opening will put the Warner Bros. release in the middle of two recent superhero flicks: Thor started off with $65.7 million and X-Men: First Class debuted to $55.1 million. Whether or not Green Lantern will mark the beginning of a viable franchise remains to be seen. Word-of-mouth isn't all that great at this early stage. More than 62,000 Flixster users have combined to give Lantern a week 72% approval rating.

Mr. Popper's Penguins grabbed $6.4 millio million on Friday. While the comedy's opening won't be great, it will exceed the modest expectations placed on it. There's no question that Jim Carrey's star power is waning. He may have one or two blockbusters in him, but Penguins won't be one of them.

Super 8 will hold up reasonably well during it sophomore frame. The sci-fi flick is coasting along nicely on healthy word-of-mouth. An 82% approval rating from nearly 48,000 Flixster users is pretty impressive.
