'Super 8' Set To Claim Top Spot

on June 11, 2011 by Phil Contrino

With a solid $12.2 million in the bank on Friday, Super 8 is headed for $34 million during its debut frame. The opening is right in line with industry expectationsnobody was expecting a blockbuster debut. Super 8's first frame will fall just shy of the debut hauls of two recent alien-themed flicks: District 9 grabbed $37.4 million and Battle: Los Angeles took in $35.6 million. The overall CinemaScore rating is a B+. Paramount is reporting that 71% of the audience is over 25, and 56% is male.

Judy Moody And The Not Bummer Summer's will fall short of two other young girl-skewing flicks: Ramona and Beezus opened to $7.81 million and Nancy Drew debuted to $6.83 million.

Midnight in Paris is doing very well during its first weekend of wide release. At the pace it's going, Woody Allen's latest should have no problem topping the $23 million haul of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the writer/director's biggest recent hit.
