Over-Performing 'Smurfs' Holds Lead Over 'Cowboys & Aliens'

The Smurfs will defy expectations this weekend thanks to a strong $13.3 million start on Friday. The animation/live-action flick should be able to grab the top spot, fending off two tough competitors in Cowboys & Aliens and Captain America. The overall CinemaScore rating is currently an A-. More than 24,000 Flixster users have combined to give The Smurfs a 72% approval rating.

With $13 million in the bank of Friday, Cowboys & Aliens is on pace $35.5 million by the time the weekend is through. The sci-fi/western hybrid failed to catch on with critics, and fanboys aren't exactly foaming at the mouth either. Early word-of-mouth is only so-sonearly 42,000 Flixster users have combined to give it a 69% approval rating. A loss to The Smurfs will be a bit embarrassing for a film with the kind of pedigree that Cowboys & Aliens has, but the Universal release still has a shot at the #1 spot.

Crazy, Stupid, Love managed $6.6 million on Friday. Even though critics weren't too kind to the rom-com, adult moviegoers are clearly hungry for something that doesn't feature robots, explosions, aliens or car chases. The WB release is serving the same audience that felt let down by Larry Crowne.

Check back tomorrow for studio weekend estimates.
