'Moneyball' Takes Over First Place on Tuesday

on September 28, 2011 by Daniel Garris

Sony's Moneyball moved into first place on Tuesday with $1.81 million. The critically acclaimed baseball drama starring Brad Pitt was up a very solid 25 percent from Monday. However, it should also be noted the daily increases were strong in general for wide releases yesterday. Moneyball has grossed $22.76 million through five days of release, which is in line with expectations. The film is running 2 percent ahead of the pace of 2008's Burn After Reading and 15 percent behind the pace of last year's The Social Network.

The Lion King 3D fell one spot from Monday to take second place with $1.74 million. Disney's 3D reissue of its 1994 animated blockbuster trailed Moneyball by $70,540 for the day. The Lion King 3D was up 18 percent over Monday and down 33 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for The Lion King 3D stands at a stronger than expected $64.70 million. That places the lifetime domestic total gross for The Lion King at $393.24 million.

Open Road's Killer Elite grossed $0.98 million to remain in third place. The action thriller starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro was up 26 percent over Monday. Killer Elite has grossed $11.11 million through five days of release. That is on the low end of pre-release expectations and places the film 16 percent behind the pace of this year's The Mechanic.

Dolphin Tale held steady in fourth place with $0.88 million. Like The Lion King 3D, Dolphin Tale was also up 18 percent over Monday. Dolphin Tale has grossed a better than expected $20.78 million in five days, placing it 32 percent ahead of the pace of last year's Secretariat. While midweek grosses have been limited for Dolphin Tale so far, the film should pick back up in a big way over the weekend.

Abduction was up 30 percent and one spot over Monday to round out Tuesday's top five with $0.73 million. The Taylor Lautner vehicle from Lionsgate has grossed $12.22 million in five days, which is on the lower end of expectations. Abduction is currently running 11 percent ahead of the pace of this year's Beastly and 26 percent behind the pace of this year's Red Riding Hood.
