The Help grossed $1.34 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a 24th consecutive day. The Disney released DreamWorks film starring Emma Stone was down just 10 percent from Tuesday and down a slim 26 percent from last Wednesday. While The Help is widely expected to see its #1 streak ended on Friday by Warner's Contagion, it is still on course to hold up very well this weekend and will have a very good chance of holding off Lionsgate's Warrior for second place over the frame. The Help has simply demolished expectations with a 29-day gross of $127.10 million, which gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.88 to 1.
The Debt grossed $0.75 million to hold steady in second place. The Focus release starring Helen Mirren fell 20 percent from Tuesday and a slim 23 percent from last Wednesday's opening day performance. The Debt has outpaced its very modest pre-release expectations with an eight-day take of $16.44 million. That places the film 24 percent behind the pace of last year's The American and 19 percent ahead of the pace of 2005's The Constant Gardener. Furthermore, The Debt is displaying stronger holding power than both of those films did in their initial days of release.
Sony's Colombiana remained in third place with $0.52 million. The TriStar release starring Zoe Saldana was down 24 percent from Tuesday and down 41 percent from last Wednesday. Colombiana is holding up pretty well for an action film released in late August and has now grossed $25.33 million through 13 days of release. The film is likely to hit the $30 million mark on either Sunday or Monday.
The Weinstein Company's Our Idiot Brother was up two spots from Tuesday to take fourth on Wednesday with $0.448 million. That outpaced Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes by a very slim $2,151 and fellow Weinstein Company release Apollo 18 by $19,859 for the day. Our Idiot Brother fell 21 percent from Tuesday and 38 percent from last Wednesday. The film's 13-day total stands at $18.29 million.
