The Lion King 3D remained strong on Tuesday, while Drive continued to earn solid midweek grosses.

‘The Lion King 3D’ #1 on Tuesday with $2.62 Million

on September 21, 2011 by Daniel Garris

Disney's The Lion King 3D grossed $2.62 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The 3D re-issue of the 1994 animated blockbuster was up 13 percent over Monday. That represented one of the day's weaker daily holds among wide releases, but was quite understandable given the size of the film's grosses and the fact that it already held up very well on Monday for a family film at this time of year. The Lion King 3D has grossed a better than expected $35.08 million in five days of release. When including re-issue grosses, the lifetime domestic gross for The Lion King now stands at $363.62 million.

FilmDistrict's Drive grossed $1.323 million to remain in second place on Tuesday. The Nicolas Winding Refn directed film starring Ryan Gosling topped Warner's Contagion by a slim $26,835 for the day. Drive was up a very solid 26 percent over Monday, which represented the film's second straight healthy daily hold in a row. Thus far Drive is running in line with expectations with a five-day start of $13.72 million. The film is currently running 11 percent ahead of the pace of 2009's The Informant! (which experienced a 23 percent increase on its first Tuesday).

Contagion held steady in third place with $1.296 million. The Steven Soderbergh directed film starring Matt Damon was up 27 percent from Monday and down a respectable 41 percent from last Tuesday. Contagion has grossed $46.58 million in twelve days of release and is set to zoom past the $50 million mark on Friday.

New wide releases Straw Dogs and I Don't Know How She Does It took fifth and sixth place respectively. Sony's Straw Dogs was up 20 percent over Monday to gross $0.514 million, while I Don't Know How She Does It was up a significant 56 percent to gross $0.501 million. So far both films have failed to live up to their modest expectations with respective five-day grosses of $6.07 million for Straw Dogs and $5.23 million I Don't Know How She Does It.
