An underdog story pulled off an underdog victory at the box office this weekend.
Dolphin Tale managed to fend off four newcomers in order to claim the #1 spot during its sophomore frame. The WB release took in $3.480 million on Friday and $6.525 million on Saturday. Family-skewing flicks have been dominating the box office over the last couple of weekends.
50/50 has emerged as the weekend's strongest newcomer. The dramedy managed $2.9 million on Saturday and $3.6 million on Saturday. Summit is reporting that 83% of the opening weekend crowd were between the age 18-49, with 54% being female. The overall CinemaScore rating is a solid A-. On Flixster, more than 16,500 users have combined to give the film an impressive 94% approval rating.
Courageous is not far behind 50/50. The inspirational drama roped in $3.225 million on Friday and $2.475 million on Saturday. Sony is reporting 77% of the crowd were over 25, with 53% being female. Courageous boasts an over A+ CinemaScore rating. Nearly 5,500 Flixster users have combined to give Courageous a healthy 93% approval rating.
Dream House tallied $2.9 million on Friday and $3.513 on Saturday. Word of mouth is toxic as evidenced by the dismal 44% approval rating from more than 9,000 Flixster users.
What's Your Number? landed with a thud during its debut frame. The 20th Century Fox release raked in only $2.050 million on Friday and $2.175 million on Saturday. Fox is reporting 63% over 25 and 63% female for the opening weekend crowd. The overall CinemaScore rating is a B. Nearly 10,000 Flixster users combined to give the romantic comedy a mediocre 60% approval rating.
