'Immortals' Easily Tops Fellow Newcomers, Exceeds Expectations

on November 12, 2011 by Phil Contrino

Immortals is well on its way to defying expectations this weekend. Relativity's swords-and-sandals epic took in an impressive $15 million on Friday. Word of mouth is solid thanks to a 75% approval rating from nearly 18,200 Flixster users. Concerns that the film would be written off as simply a 300 rip-off have now been alleviated.

Critics may be having a great time thrashing Jack and Jill, but paying moviegoers could really care less. Adam Sandler's latest managed a healthy $9.85 million on Friday. A 65% approval rating from nearly 9,000 Flixster users isn't exactly glowing, but it's far from a disaster. Either way, Jack and Jill needs to grab as much as it can this weekend because it will be crippled by the emergence of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I and Happy Feet Two next weekend.

Puss In Boots will end up very close to Jack and Jill and it could still pull off a victory. DreamWorks Animation's latest effort is holding up very well: $9 million on Friday is quite impressive.

J. Edgar is off to a relatively slow start. The historical biopic managed $4.25 million on Friday. Word of mouth lacks the kind of enthusiasm that a serious Oscar contender would have: nearly 11,300 Flixster users have combined to deliver a 72% approval ratingdown from 77% as of Friday evening. Critics have not been kind to Clint Eastwood's latest, and the paying public isn't reacting much better.
