With Halloween now behind us, Puss in Boots returned to the top of the daily box office on Tuesday. The computer animated Shrek spin-off from DreamWorks Animation grossed $2.43 million for the day. That was up 15 percent from Monday, which represented an average daily hold compared to other wide releases yesterday. Puss in Boots continues to perform below expectations with a five-day start of $38.62 million, but will have a very good chance of holding up well this coming weekend. The film is currently running 10 percent behind the pace of 2007's Bee Movie.
Fox's In Time was up one spot and a healthy 27 percent over Monday to move into second on Tuesday with $1.36 million. Yesterday's hold suggests that the sci-fi film starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried did indeed have some of its potential limited by Halloween weekend. In Time has grossed $14.48 million through five days of release, which is on the lower end of expectations and places the film 13 percent behind the pace of this year's Red Riding Hood.
Paranormal Activity 3 was down two spots and a massive 48 percent from Monday to place in third with $1.33 million. The low-budget horror sequel trailed In Time by just $33,009 for the day. While it is losing momentum very quickly, Paranormal Activity 3 has already grossed a terrific $84.78 million in just twelve days of release. Paranormal Activity 3 has now out-grossed the $84.75 million final domestic gross of last year's Paranormal Activity 2.
Like In Time, FilmDistrict's The Rum Diary also held up nicely on Tuesday. The Johnny Depp vehicle was up 26 percent over Monday to hold steady in fourth place with $0.68 million. However, despite displaying very solid mid-week holding power so far, The Rum Diary has still only been able to gross a very lackluster $6.36 million in its first five days in theatres.
