Paramount's Puss in Boots grossed $1.88 million on Wednesday to continue to lead the daily box office. The Shrek spin-off from DreamWorks Animation has now led the daily box office for five of the past six days. Puss in Boots fell 23 percent from Tuesday and in the process topped the $40 million mark. With a six-day gross of $40.51 million, Puss in Boots is currently running 9 percent behind the pace of 2007's Bee Movie. With last weekend's grosses being deflated from a number of outside factors and no new family films entering the marketplace this weekend, chances are strong that Puss in Boots will hold up extremely well this weekend.
Fox's In Time held steady in second place with $1.01 million. After holding up very well on Tuesday, the sci-fi film starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried was down a sharp 26 on Wednesday. In Time has grossed $15.49 million through five days of release. That is on the low end of pre-release expectations and places the film 12.5 percent behind the pace of this year's Red Riding Hood.
Paranormal Activity 3 grossed $0.99 million to remain in third place. Paramount's blockbuster horror sequel trailed In Time by a slim $23,263 for the day. Paranormal Activity 3 continues to fall off quickly in the days after Halloween, as the film was down 26 percent from Tuesday and down 54 percent from last Wednesday. With that said, with a 13-day total of $85.77 million Paranormal Activity 3 has already out-grossed the entire domestic run of last year's Paranormal Activity 2.
The Rum Diary placed in fourth with $0.54 million. The Johnny Depp vehicle from FilmDistrict fell 20 percent from Tuesday, which represented a reasonable daily hold yesterday among wide releases. The Rum Diary has been displaying solid midweek holding power so far, but on the heels of a disappointing opening weekend performance the film has still only managed $6.91 million in six days of release.
