'Tower Heist' Outpaces 'Puss in Boots' on Wednesday

After finishing in second place each of the past four days, Tower Heist moved into first on Monday with $1.38 million. The Universal comedy starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy fell 30 percent from Tuesday's performance. The marketplace in general on Wednesday was down significantly from Tuesday's Election Day inflated grosses. Tower Heist has grossed $28.89 million in six days and is set to surpass the $30 million mark today. The film is currently running a lackluster 28 percent behind the pace of last year's Due Date.

Puss in Boots fell one spot and a sharp 45 percent from Tuesday to finish in a close second with $1.33 million. The computer animated film from Paramount and DreamWorks animation trailed Tower Heist by a slim $50,066 for the day. Despite yesterday's decline, Puss in Boots was still only down 29 percent from last Wednesday. Puss in Boots topped the $80 million mark yesterday and has grossed $80.93 million through 13 days. With Veterans Day falling on Friday look for the family friendly film to pick up in a big way today and tomorrow.

Warner's A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas held steady in third place with $0.92 million. The 3D comedy sequel fell 29 percent from Wednesday. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas has grossed a so-so $16.20 million through six days of release. That places the film 12 percent behind the pace of 2008's Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (which didn't have the benefit of higher priced 3D tickets).

Fellow Warner Bros. release J. Edgar opened with $52,645 in its first day of platform release. The Clint Eastwood directed biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio earned a per-location average of $7,521 for the day from 7 locations.  Last Year Hereafter grossed $60,701 from 6 locations on its first day of of platform release, albeit on a Friday instead of a Wednesday. J. Edgar will expand into wide release on Friday and will be playing in 1,910 locations this weekend.
