Summit's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 topped the daily box office on Tuesday with $1.32 million. The fourth installment of the blockbuster fantasy franchise has now led the daily box office for 19 consecutive days. Breaking Dawn - Part 1 was up 15 percent over Monday and down 50 percent from last Tuesday. With a 19-day gross of $249.39 million, Breaking Dawn - Part 1 is set to clear the $250 million mark today. Breaking Dawn - Part 1 continues to run 3 percent behind the pace of 2009's The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
The Muppets grossed $0.68 million to hold steady in second place. The franchise re-launch from Disney was up 19 percent over Monday and down a solid 34.5 percent from last Tuesday. After experiencing a significant second weekend decline, yesterday's performance suggests that the film is now beginning to stabilize. The Muppets has grossed $57.61 million through two weeks of release, placing the film 19.5 percent behind the pace of 2007's Enchanted.
Paramount's Hugo finished just a hair behind The Muppets to take third with $0.67 million. The Martin Scorsese directed 3D family film trailed The Muppets by just $11,167 for the day. Hugo was up an impressive 30 percent over Monday and up 9 percent over last Tuesday. Thanks in part to displaying strong holding power so far Hugo has grossed $26.31 million through two weeks of release. Look for the film to hold up very well once again this coming weekend.
Fellow family film Arthur Christmas finished in sixth with $0.43 million. The computer animated film from Sony was up a strong 31 percent over Monday and down a very slim 2 percent from last Tuesday. Like Hugo, Arthur Christmas continues to display strong holding power. The two-week total for Arthur Christmas stands at $26.10 million, placing Arthur Christmas just behind the two-week total of Hugo.
On the platform front, Fox Searchlight's Shame and The Weinstein Company's The Artist both continued to post strong per-location averages. Shame grossed $43,810 from 10 locations to give it a per-location average of $4,381 for the day. The Artist grossed $22,133 from 6 locations, giving it a daily per-location average of $3,689. Respective total grosses stand at $432,667 in five days for Shame and at $544,658 in twelve days for The Artist.
