Warner's New Year's Eve grossed $0.99 million on Monday to remain at the top of the daily box office. The ensemble romantic comedy directed by Garry Marshall fell 64 percent from Sunday. New Year's Eve is off to a modest four-day start of $14.01 million. That places the film a slim 1 percent ahead of the $13.82 million four-day start of 2006's The Holiday, though Monday's gross for New Year's Eve was slightly lower than the $1.04 million The Holiday grossed on its first Monday. New Year's Eve will hope to hold up well throughout December, though that will be easier said than done given the large slate of wide releases entering the marketplace throughout the second half of the month.
The Sitter held steady in second place with $0.91 million. Fox's R-rated comedy starring Jonah Hill trailed New Year's Eve by just $79,609 for the day. The Sitter was down a very solid 61 percent from Sunday, though it should be noted that R-rated comedies typically experience strong daily holds on their first Monday. The Sitter has grossed $10.76 million through four days of release, which is on the low end of pre-release expectations.
Summit's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 claimed third with $0.65 million. The fourth installment of the blockbuster fantasy franchise fell 67 percent from Sunday and 43 percent from last Monday. Breaking Dawn - Part 1 has grossed $260.05 million in 25 days, placing it 3 percent behind the pace of 2009's The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
Awards season hopefuls Hugo and The Descendants claimed fourth and fifth places respectively. Paramount's Hugo was down 73 percent from Sunday to gross $0.46 million, while Fox Searchlight's The Descendants was down just 60 percent from Sunday to gross $0.42 million. In comparison to last Monday, Hugo was down 10 percent and The Descendants was up 19 percent. Holds for both films this week have been helped by a combination of awards buzz, strong word of mouth and increased location counts. Current total grosses stand at $33.88 million for Hugo and at $24.05 million for The Descendants.
