Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows grossed $5.16 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth straight day. The Warner Bros. sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. was up 5 percent over Monday. On the heels of an underwhelming start this past weekend; A Game of Shadows has displayed very solid holding power on both Monday and Tuesday. That is a good sign for the film going forward, though it is still likely to take a hit today from the additions of Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Paramount's The Adventures of Tintin in the marketplace (as well as from the expansion of Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol into wide release). Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows has grossed $49.73 million in five days, placing it 41 percent behind the pace of the $83.69 million five-day start of 2009's Sherlock Holmes.

Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was up a strong 29 percent over Monday to gross $3.51 million. Family films in general experienced especially strong daily increases on Tuesday. While yesterday's hold is an encouraging sign for the film going forward, thus far Chipwrecked has grossed a modest $29.46 million in five days. That places the film 40 percent behind the pace of the $49.45 million five-day start of 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol fell 16 percent to gross $1.69 million on Tuesday. Paramount's action sequel starring Tom Cruise lost a bit of momentum in its mostly IMAX limited release yesterday. However, upon expanding into wide release late last night, the film grossed an additional estimated $2.0 million (which will officially be counted towards Wednesday's gross). Ghost Protocol will continue its expansion today when it will be playing in a total of 3,448 locations. The five-day haul for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol stands at $17.09 million.

Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo grossed an estimated $1.6 million from Tuesday evening and midnight screenings at 2,600 locations. An official break-down of that figure into separate evening and midnight grosses has yet to be released. The anticipated David Fincher directed remake is playing in a total of 2,914 locations beginning today.
