Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol grossed $2.45 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a 16th consecutive day. The Brad Bird directed action sequel starring Tom Cruise fell a solid 7 percent from Wednesday. Ghost Protocol was the week's top film with a weekly take of $46.72 million. That was down 34 percent from the previous frame and places the film's three-week total at a strong $149.70 million. With fellow Paramount release The Devil Inside grossing an estimated $2.0 million at midnight; Ghost Protocol is highly likely to slip to second place today.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows grossed $1.88 million to remain in second place. The Warner Bros. sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. fell a solid 7 percent from Wednesday. A Game of Shadows took second place for the week with $33.34 million. That was down 35 percent from the previous week and places the film's three-week total at $143.36 million. A Game of Shadows is currently running 16 percent behind the pace of 2009's Sherlock Holmes.
Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo continued to display strong holding power yesterday as it was down just 5 percent from Wednesday. The David Fincher directed remake grossed $1.70 million for the day to hold steady in third. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was down just 23 percent from last week to place in fourth this week with $24.78 million. The film has grossed a respectable $65.54 million in 16 days and is likely to continue to hold well going forward.
War Horse held steady in fourth place with $1.26 million. The Disney released Steven Spielberg directed DreamWorks film was down a slim 3 percent from Wednesday. War Horse finished in fifth for the week with $22.20 million and has now grossed $48.23 million through 12 days of release. Meanwhile, fellow Steven Spielberg directed film The Adventures of Tintin grossed a similar $19.24 million for the week to place in seventh. The Paramount release has grossed $55.28 million to date domestically.
Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rounded out Thursday's top five with $1.08 million. The third installment of the family film franchise took third for the week with $25.73 million. Meanwhile, fellow Fox release and family film We Bought a Zoo grossed $20.61 million this week to finish in sixth. Respective total grosses stand at $102.09 million for Chipmunked through three weeks and at $48.09 million for We Bought a Zoo in two weeks.
