Contraband grossed $1.63 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth time over the past six days. Universal's modestly budgeted action film starring Mark Wahlberg fell 25 percent from Tuesday. That was a fairly significant daily decline and could be an early signal that the film will take big hit from this weekend's four wide releases, especially from Sony's Underworld Awakening and Fox's Red Tails. With that in mind, Contraband has already grossed $32.32 million in just six days. The film's six-day total is nearly in line with the unadjusted $31.16 million six-day start of Coach Carter, which opened over Martin Luther King weekend back in 2005.
Beauty and the Beast 3D grossed $0.78 million to remain in second place. Disney's 3D re-issue of its 1991 animated classic fell 24 percent from Tuesday. That was more in line with the daily decline of We Bought a Zoo (down 23 percent) than it was with the declines of Tintin (down 30 percent) and Chipwrecked (down 31 percent); another sign of the film attracting more adults than a typical family film. Beauty and the Beast 3D has grossed a solid $24.01 million through six days, placing it 36 percent behind the pace of last year's The Lion King 3D. The lifetime domestic gross for Beauty and the Beast now stands at $195.36 million.
Fellow new release Joyful Noise also fell 24 percent from Tuesday to hold steady in fourth with $0.60 million. The Warner Bros. release starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton has grossed $15.20 million in six days, which is slightly below pre-release expectations.
Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $0.575 million. In the process the David Fincher directed remake passed the $90 million mark. The 29-day total for the film stands at $90.45 million.
The Iron Lady was up one spot from Tuesday to take sixth on Wednesday with $0.561 million. The awards season hopeful from The Weinstein Company fell just 11 percent from Tuesday. The Iron Lady has grossed $8.40 million to date and will be playing in 1,076 locations beginning on Friday.
