Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol grossed $2.63 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a 15th consecutive day. The Brad Bird directed action sequel starring Tom Cruise fell 23 percent from Tuesday, as daily grosses in general were down significantly from the previous day with the holiday season now at an end. Ghost Protocol fell 69 percent from last Wednesday. With the aid of strong word of mouth and IMAX grosses, Ghost Protocol has grossed $147.25 million through 20 days of release. That makes Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol the highest grossing domestic release of this December.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows held steady in second place with $2.01 million. The Warner Bros. sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. fell 21 percent from Tuesday and 69 percent from last Wednesday. A Game of Shadows topped the $140 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $141.48 million in 20 days. The film is currently running 16 percent behind the pace of 2009's Sherlock Holmes, as it continues to close the percentage gap between itself and the first installment of the franchise.

Alvin in the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked fell one spot and 36 percent from Tuesday to take fifth with $1.23 million on Wednesday. With more and more schools back in session as the week continues, family films in general experienced some of the day's poorer daily holds. On the bright side, the Fox sequel passed by the $100 million milestone yesterday and has now grossed $101.01 million in 20 days. Chipwrecked has grossed $80.8 million internationally so far, which places its current worldwide total at $181.8 million.

Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Disney's War Horse experienced two of Wednesday's better daily holds among wide releases. Dragon Tattoo fell just 13 percent from Tuesday to place in third with $1.80 million, while War Horse fell 17 percent to finish in fourth with $1.31 million. Respective total grosses stand at $63.83 million for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and at $46.96 million for War Horse.
