Sony's Underworld Awakening grossed $1.54 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. The 3D action sequel starring Kate Beckinsale fell 28 percent from Tuesday, which represented one of the day's larger daily percentage declines among wide releases. Underworld Awakening topped the $30 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $31.09 million in six days of release. That places the film 27 percent ahead of the pace of 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and just 2 percent behind the pace of 2006's Underworld: Evolution. It should be noted that Underworld Awakening has had the added advantage higher priced 3D and IMAX admissions, which neither Rise of the Lycans nor Evolution had.
Fox's Red Tails held steady in second place with $0.97 million. The Lucasfilm produced WWII film starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard fell 25 percent from Tuesday. Red Tails has grossed $22.39 million in six days, which is on the high end of pre-release expectations. The film will hope to hold up well this weekend with the aid of solid word of mouth and from its more weekend friendly PG-13 rating.
Contraband grossed $0.88 million to remain in third. The Mark Wahlberg action vehicle from Universal fell 24 percent from Tuesday and 46 percent from last Wednesday. With a better than expected 13-day gross of $48.98 million, Contraband is now on the verge of clearing the $50 million mark.
Warner's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close continued to lead Best Picture Oscar nominees with a fourth place take of $0.77 million. However, the Stephen Daldry directed film didn't hold up as well as other Best Picture nominees yesterday, as it fell 23 percent from Tuesday. Other daily grosses for Best Picture nominees on Wednesday included $355,221 for The Weinstein Company's The Artist (up 2 percent), $325,038 for Disney's War Horse (down 14 percent), $271,058 for Fox Searchlight's The Descendants (down 6 percent) and $157,264 for Paramount's Hugo (up 16 percent).
