Sony's The Vow continued its impressive run with $11.56 million on Tuesday (a massive increase of 247 percent over Monday). The performance represented the largest midweek Valentine's Day gross of all-time, as it easily topped the $7.52 million gross of previous record holder 2005's Hitch. When including Valentine's Day holidays that fell during the weekend, The Vow delivered the sixth largest Valentine's Day gross on record (2010's Valentine's Day is the current record holder with $23.39 million). The Vow has now grossed $56.09 million in just five days of release. That places the Screen Gems release 63 percent ahead of the pace of 2010's Dear John and 44 percent ahead of last year's Just Go with It.
Also performing very nicely on Valentine's Day was Universal's Safe House. The action thriller starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds grossed $6.08 million, which represented an increase of 106 percent over Monday. Safe House registered the fifth largest midweek Valentine's Day gross on record (behind The Vow, Hitch, and the opening day grosses of 2008's Jumper and Step Up 2 the Streets). Safe House continues to exceed expectations with a five-day start of $49.20 million. That places the film 47 percent ahead of the pace 2006's Inside Man and 20 percent ahead of 2010's The Book of Eli.
Warner's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was up 88 percent over Monday to remain in third with $2.39 million. The 3D adventure sequel starring Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson topped the $30 million mark yesterday and has now grossed a stronger than expected $31.00 million in five days. Journey 2 is extremely likely to hold up very well over Presidents Day weekend, which is traditionally a strong frame for films aimed at family audiences.
The Woman in Black held up especially well, as it was up 191 percent over Monday to place in fourth on Tuesday with $1.63 million. The PG-13 thriller from CBS Films starring Daniel Radcliffe experienced one of the day's better holds. The twelve-day total for The Woman in Black stands at $37.45 million.
