'The Hunger Games' Remains #1 on Wednesday

on April 12, 2012 by Daniel Garris

The Hunger Games grossed $2.85 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a 20th consecutive day. The blockbuster adaptation from Lionsagate was down a solid 13 percent from Tuesday and down 38 percent from last Wednesday. In general, daily holds on Wednesday were stronger than normal yesterday in part from Tuesday's holds being softer than normal this week. The Hunger Games has now grossed a massive $312.74 million through 20 days of release. That currently places the film 14.5 percent ahead of the pace of 2010's Alice in Wonderland.

Universal's American Reunion grossed $1.64 million to remain in second place. However, the fourth installment of the comedy franchise was down a sharp 27 percent from Tuesday, which easily represented the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases. With the exception of Tuesday's performance, so far American Reunion has shown early signs of being front-loaded. The film has grossed an underwhelming $27.69 million in six days, placing it 22 percent ahead of the pace of last year's Scream 4.

Paramount's Titanic 3D held steady in third with $1.55 million. The 3D re-issue of the 1997 blockbuster fell 16 percent from Tuesday and 65 percent from last Wednesday's opening day performance. Titanic 3D has grossed $31.26 million through eight days of domestic release (and is performing stronger internationally, where it is being handled by Fox). The film is currently running 1 percent ahead of the pace of 2010's The Last Song (which also opened the Wednesday before Easter). The all-time unadjusted domestic gross for Titanic currently stands at $632.04 million.
