Marvel's The Avengers surpassed The Hunger Games on Tuesday to become 2012's top film thus far domestically.

‘The Avengers’ Becomes 2012's Top Film on Tuesday

Marvel's The Avengers took in $8.48 million on Tuesday to easily lead the daily box office for the twelfth day in a row. In the process Disney's blockbuster superhero film over-took Lionsgate's The Hunger Games to become the highest grossing release of 2012 thus far domestically. The Avengers has grossed $389.47 million through just twelve days of release, while the 54-day total for The Hunger Games stands at $387.87 million. Compared to Monday's performance, The Avengers was up a healthy 7 percent on Tuesday, while the film was down a very reasonable 52 percent from last Tuesday. The Avengers is currently running 17 percent stronger than 2008's The Dark Knight, 67 percent stronger than 2002's Spider-Man and 110 percent stronger than 2008's Iron ManThe Avengers is set to reach the $400 million domestic milestone on Thursday.

Warner's Dark Shadows held steady in second place with $2.61 million. The latest collaboration between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton was up an encouraging 13 percent over Monday. Dark Shadows has now posted very solid daily holds three of the past four days, but whether or not that trend will continue going forward remains to be seen. The film is still running below pre-release expectations with a four-day start of $34.61 million. That places Dark Shadows 60 percent ahead of the pace of 2005's Corpse Bride and 52 percent behind the pace of 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel grossed $347,302 to remain in seventh place among all films. The John Madden directed film starring Judi Dench was up a strong 24 percent over Monday. Playing in just 178 locations, the film earned a per-location average of $1,951 for the day. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has grossed $4.37 million in twelve days and is set to expand into additional locations on Friday.
