Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted grossed $5.41 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. The 3D computer animated sequel from Paramount and DreamWorks fell 6 percent from Wednesday. Madagascar 3 led the weekly box office with a stronger than expected seven-day start of $84.95 million. The film is currently running 4 percent stronger than the $81.89 million seven-day start of 2008's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and 7 percent softer than the $90.93 million seven-day start of last year's Cars 2. Madagascar 3 has a good chance of holding off both Warner's Rock of Ages and Sony's That's My Boy to remain in first place over the weekend.
After a respectable Wednesday hold, Fox's Prometheus lost momentum on Thursday. The Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film grossed $3.32 million, which was down 18 percent from Wednesday and kept the film in second place. Game 2 of the NBA Finals likely had more of an effect on Prometheus than it did on other films in the marketplace yesterday, but even with that in mind, yesterday's hold wasn't a good sign for the film heading into its second weekend. Prometheus took second place for the week with a seven-day start of $68.66 million, which was in line with pre-release expectations. Prometheus is currently running 36 percent stronger than the $50.55 million seven-day start of 2004's Alien vs. Predator and 7 percent softer than the $73.89 million seven-day start of last year's X-Men: First Class.
Snow White and the Huntsman held steady in third place with $2.21 million. Universal's big-budget adaptation fell 8 percent from Wednesday and 46 percent from last Thursday. For the week Snow White and the Huntsman finished in third with $33.32 million. That was down 56 percent from the film's opening week performance and places the film's two-week total at $108.797 million.
Marvel's The Avengers rounded out the day's top five with $1.31 million. Disney's blockbuster superhero film was down just 3 percent from Wednesday and down 34 percent from last Thursday. The Avengers has grossed a mighty $577.89 million in six weeks, leaving it just $22.11 million away from reaching the $600 million domestic milestone. The film is likely to get an extra boost this weekend from the Father's Day holiday on Sunday.
