$97.7 Million in First Week for ‘Brave’

on June 29, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Disney's Brave rounded out its first week in theatres on Thursday with a first place take of $6.64 million. The 3D computer animated blockbuster from Pixar was down a slim 3 percent from Wednesday. Brave was easily the week's top film with a seven-day start of $97.67 million. That was towards the higher end of pre-release expectations and places the film 3 percent ahead of the $94.69 million seven-day start of 2008's WALL•E. With Universal's Ted and Warner's Magic Mike off to strong respective Friday midnight starts of $2.63 million and $2.05 million, Brave could find itself in a three-way race for first place over the weekend.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted held steady in second place with $2.42 million. The 3D computer animated sequel from Paramount and DreamWorks Animation was unchanged from percent from Wednesday's performance and down 46 percent from last Thursday. Madagascar 3 placed in second for the week with $30.82 million. The film was down a very solid 41 percent from the previous week, especially when considering the added presence of Brave in the marketplace this week. The three-week total for Madagascar 3 stands at a stronger than expected $168.197 million.

Fox's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter grossed $1.31 million to remain in third. The collaboration between director/producer Timur Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton was down a sizable 12 percent from Wednesday, which isn't a good sign heading into the weekend. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter grossed $23.03 million in its first seven days, which was good enough for third place this week, but was also towards the lower end of expectations.

Fellow Fox release Prometheus grossed $1.04 million to continue to claim fourth. The Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film was down 6 percent from Wednesday and down 46 percent from last Thursday. For the week, Prometheus was down 51 percent from the previous frame to take fourth with $14.79 million. That brings the film's three-week total to $113.34 million.
