Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted grossed $4.38 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a tenth consecutive day. The 3D computer animated sequel from Paramount and DreamWorks Animation was down 59 percent from Sunday's Father's Day performance and down 31 percent from last Monday. With more and more schools out of session for the summer, midweek holds continue to strengthen, especially for films aimed at children and teens. Madagascar 3 has grossed a stronger than expected $123.39 million through eleven days of release, placing the film 1 percent ahead of the pace of last year's Cars 2.
Fox's Prometheus claimed second place with $2.55 million. In the process, the Ridley Scott directed 3D sci-fi film topped the $90 million mark yesterday. With an eleven-day gross of $91.92 million, Prometheus is currently running 9 percent behind the pace of last year's X-Men: First Class. Prometheus fell 64 percent from Sunday's Father's Day inflated performance and 51 percent from last Monday. After experiencing a large decline over the past weekend, this week's holds will be especially important for Prometheus going forward.
That's My Boy took third place for the day with $2.00 million. The R-rated Adam Sandler vehicle from Sony was down just 52 percent from Sunday, though it should be noted that it is common for R-rated films to have strong first-Monday holds. That's My Boy has grossed a very disappointing $15.46 million in four days, placing it 41 percent behind the pace of last year's Jack and Jill.
Fellow new release Rock of Ages rounded out the day's top five with $1.59 million. The Warner Bros. musical featuring Tom Cruise fell 57 percent from Sunday. After a very disappointing start over the weekend, Rock of Ages will hope to stabilize throughout the midweek. Rock of Ages has grossed just $16.03 million in four days, placing it 50 percent behind the pace of 2007's Hairspray.
Marvel's The Avengers placed in seventh with $1.13 million. Disney's blockbuster superhero film fell 67 percent from its Father's Day performance and just 18 percent from last Monday. The Avengers has grossed $587.93 million in 46 days and is now just $12.07 million away from reaching the $600 million domestic milestone.
