With $10.055 million in the bank on Friday and $13,375 million on Saturday, Madagascar 3 will outgross Rock of Ages and That's My Boy combined. The animated flick proves that families were starving for something to see this summer. Madagascar 3 needs to make as much as it can this week before Brave steals away its audience next weekend.
Prometheus grabbed $5.8 million on Friday and $7.8 million on Saturday, which will be good enough for 2nd place. There are plenty of detractors badmouthing the sci-fi flick, and the result is an underwhelming sophomore frame.
Rock of Ages is a dud. The '80s-themed musical took in only $5.4 million on Friday and $5.5 on Saturday. Warner Bros. estimates that $225,000 of the weekend haul will come from 35 IMAX locations. Director Adam Shankman's film is clearly not roping in enough couples. The audience breakdown is 62% female/38% male and 74% over 25/26% under 25.
That's My Boy is also off to a very weak start. Adam Sandler's latest grabbed only $4.6 million on Friday and $4.715 million on Saturday. Moviegoers must still be feeling jaded after Jack and Jill, Sandler's atrocious effort from November 2011.
