‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ Still #1, but Down Sharply on Wednesday

on July 19, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Fox's Ice Age: Continental Drift grossed $5.11 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. However, the fourth installment of the popular computer animated franchise was down a sharp 25 percent from Tuesday. On the heels of Tuesday's strong daily holds, Wednesday declines were noteworthy for wide releases in general, with building anticipation for Warner's Friday midnight launch of The Dark Knight Rises no doubt having an effect. Continental Drift surpassed the $60 million mark on Wednesday and has grossed a solid $63.80 million through six days of release (the film is performing far stronger internationally). That places Continental Drift 13 percent behind the $73.34 million six-day start of 2009's Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (which opened on a Wednesday).

The Amazing Spider-Man took in $4.02 million to remain in second place. Sony's superhero franchise reboot fell a hefty 26 percent from Tuesday, but was also down a very respectable 38 percent from last Wednesday. The Amazing Spider-Man has grossed $214.31 million through 16 days of release. While the film has exceeded the expectations of many thus far, the presence of The Dark Knight Rises will obviously make it much harder for The Amazing Spider-Man to hold up well going forward. The Amazing Spider-Man is currently running 10 percent softer than 2007's Transformers and 21 percent stronger than 2008's Hancock (which opened just over two weeks before The Dark Knight).

Universal's Ted held steady in third place with $2.66 million. The break-out R rated comedy fell 20 percent from Tuesday and a healthy 34 percent from last Wednesday. Ted has grossed $168.17 million through in 20 days, leaving it just $31.83 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic milestone.

Brave reached the $200 million domestic milestone on Wednesday, making it the sixth release of 2012 to do so thus far. The computer animated film from Disney and Pixar placed in fourth for the day with $1.63 million, which was down 19 percent from Tuesday and down 39 percent from last Wednesday. Brave hit the $200 million mark on its 27th day of release and has grossed $200.71 million to date.
